Welcome! This post presents and illustrates the Explanation of Phobias: i) Behavioral Explanation of Phobias (classical conditioning, Watson, 1920); ii) Psychological Explanation of Phobias (Freud, 1909); iii) Biomedical/Genetic Explanation of Phobias (Ost, 1992); iv) Cognitive Explanation of Phobias (DiNardo et.al., 1988); as per the requirements of the IB IGCSE A 9990 syllabus including summaries of the studies mentioned in the section, and an evaluation of the explanations from the point of view of the issues and debates as outlined in the syllabus. It also includes an explanation of key terms from an operational point-of-view. DeleteSocial desirability is a problem only when it influences the impact of the independent variable on the dependent variable. For the present study, the independent variable was induction of feelings of hypocrisy and therefore, it did not matter what kind of responses the participants gave on the interview. What mattered was that they should have felt hypocrisy inside themselves irrespective of how they answered the interview. So neither social desirability nor acquiescence bias are a source of bias for this study.
