IGNOU provides a very flexible system to students who wish to pursue psychology in the form of a credit-based study system. For a student at the entry-level of Bachelors in Psychology, the system makes a provision for 16 credits, 4 credits each in the following courses:

Seemingly vast at first glance, these complementary courses provide for a firm foundation that make the future course much simpler. IGNOU is one of the few universities which expects the student to have decided his/her majors before beginning even the first year. This is excellent, for the student is bound to be more focused and can hone his skills to the maximum in the right direction The student's task at this level is to understand the fundamental concepts of psychology, and get a grasp on applying basic statistics.

There are also student assignments that are given due weightage, since they keep distanced students of this university focused on studying. These assignments are drawn from  the topics in the syllabus itself, and are fairly easy to complete.

Students mistakenly believe that since the course is more or less theoretical, and notes are readily available, it is easy to master. Yet, there are lot of enquirers for tuition from this university when they realize at the last minute that this course, like any other requires dedication and sincerity. There is in fact a lot to do within the specialization in this year compared to students of other universities.

The key to a good performance here, is planned studying and thorough understanding of concepts. Distance students find it hard to maintain discipline, which is the primary cause of concern. With regular learning, indiscipline is easily overcome. As for concepts, reading notes is often not sufficient for a lot of students to imbibe information in their learning. They can do with some extra help.
